Education as a Platform 
   for Sustainable Development         

                     

     Education is a vehicle for development and progress. It becomes more significant if coupled with responsibility and sustainability. Sustainability in education entails varied aspects. Enhancing one's individuality is a priority, and on how one interacts with the world around him/her is of great value.

     Statistics on the other hand plays a very important role in education and to mankind. Since statistics could be defined as facts and figures, this generally conveys quantities of information to the populace. In a quick glance at a newspaper or from other media sources, yields statistics that deal with literacy/illiteracy rates, birth rates, crime rates, average income, unemployment rates, weather disturbances, calamities, and the like.

     Getting the average equation of these things for the last 50 years would just become easy through simple figures or statements in statistics. Thus, statistics does not only mean facts and figures but a set of mathematical procedures used to organize, summarize, and interpret information.

     Anent to the aforementioned, education, statistics, and sustainability go hand-in-hand.

III-  My Reflections:

          Module I - Introduction to 
                              Educational Statistics         
               I was so amazed by the expertise of our professor  thinking that she is just one year older than me. She shared to us the importance of statistics in our day-to-day living. It is really true that everyday in our lives statistics is always present.
          
          Module II- Variables: Matter of 
                             Statistics and Research 
              In my 17 years of teaching, I already handled pupils whose capacity ranged in varied ways. There were times, tough times especially, questions sometimes exist and also vary. Questions like- Would they learn from me? Would they live what they learn? Would they become successful and bankable individuals someday?... Well, variables really vary. As the definition says,a variable is a characteristic or condition that changes or has different values for different individuals.

          Module III- Integration of 
                             Innovation In statistics
                E-Portfolio is new to me. But I know this innovative strategy of Prof. Ava could unfold my ignorance to blogging and at the same time enhance my writing ability, so I tried to  grapple it and enjoyed it.  Though many times my daughter Josah and my friend Blessie kept on telling me on what to do and on how to do it, my blogging is still on the go.

          Module IV- The Measures 
                              of Central Tendency
               In everyday language, the goal of Central Tendency is to find the "average" or "typical" individual. The average value can be used to provide a simple description of the entire population.(Frederick Gravetter)         
               Just like computing the number of shampoo sachets used by an individual everyday. How many sachets will she/he consume for a month. This also conveys a simple description of the number of shampoo sachets used by an entire community for a month.What more for a country and for the whole globe?
               Though this problem had been posted since time immemorial, as advocates to preserve mother earth, now is the best time to recycle.

          Module V- Measures of Variation
               One of our classmates Sir Reden, reported this topic enjoyably. He sang a religious T'boli song for us before the start of  the lecture. Because it was raining, he used the rain as an example of his topic which is range- the range of the rain. We were all laughing not only because the words rhyme, but because he was also enjoying  his report. The laughter was justified when he said, "Range is the measure of the upper limit and the lower limit so we could use rain as an example."


          

                         What is an E-Portfolio?

     " In general, an ePortfolio is a purposeful collection of information and digital artifacts that demonstrates development or evidences learning outcomes, skills or competencies. The process of producing an ePortfolio (writing, typing, recording etc.) usually requires the synthesis of ideas, reflection on achievements, self-awareness and forward planning; with the potential for educational, developmental or other benefits. Specific types of ePortfolios can be defined in part by their purpose (such as presentation, application, reflection, assessment and personal development planning), pedagogic design, level of structure (intrinsic or extrinsic), duration (episodic or life-long) and other factors."

                         The ePortfolio application

"ePortfolios can be produced using simple tools (such as presentation software or blogs) but more typically using specialist ePortfolio applications that contain a level of structure (pedagogy and learning outcomes/skills) with a high level of customisation for specific contexts and support for multiple purposes. ePortfolio applications allow the owner to share specific parts or views of their portfolio online and support feedback and dialogue. Ideally ePortfolios are interoperable (for example with learning environments, recruitment services or for the migration of portfolio data to support continuity in life-long learning).

INTRODUCTION

          Education is one of the basic needs of every individual. It plays a vital role in the making of human personalities; life style, principles in life, insights, and the pursuit to happiness.It is the great avenue where every person can become educated and learned. But how can one be called educated? How can one be called learned? Attaining the height of education is the "educated" sense, and living what has been learned is the "learned" sense.

          Each individual has its own level of exposure and understanding to things, but we all have the same purpose of having education, for our growth and survival and so that we can be both educated and learned.

          Had there be no push before of having education, from informal to formal, for sure we would still be in the realm of believing things that are only the products of our hypothesizing minds which were also drawn from the lessons learned by our predecessors in their mothers' knees, rather than the scientific ones.

          If we consider learning as part of an ongoing life cycle, each day may bring insights to us as teachers. Mentors as models of minds and personalities, young or old, are just one of the many avenues of learning. Although the teacher is a focal point for the many features of education, still he/she could not be considered the sole conduit to learning because pupils/students in any means also exert effort in the molding of his/her own being and of teachers as well.

          Informal to formal, passe to innovative, and aging to growing had been the dualities in education ever since. Whatever it had been and whatever will it become such propensities add to the savory beauty of education then, now, and on.
